Heli Skiing Part 2

The 3rd and 4th runs were feeling great, until near the bottom of the 4th, in a narrowing gulley I came to stop and just plopped over in what Bob described as a very unspectacular fall.  I immediately felt a popping sensation in my right knee that I recognized as blowing out my knee as described by Deb when she blew her knee skiing with me 10 years ago or so.  For the rest of the run I wasn’t in any pain, just felt that I couldn’t completely control my right leg.  Once at the LZ with the rest of the group I exclaimed I was done.  I sat out while the others did another run enjoying the scenery.  The pilot took me back when he needed to refuel.  Bob was able to finish his six runs and ended up logging 18k vertical feet.

The next week I went in for x rays and an MRI.  I completely tore my ACL and meniscus on my right leg.  Went in last Wed AM for surgery.  Now I am forced to mellow out, sitting at home watching playoff basketball and hockey.  Go Celtics and Bruins!

Heli Skiing Part 1

Exactly two weeks ago Bob and I were driving up to the Eureka lodge to set our selves up to go Heli Skiing the following day at Majestic Heli Skiing by the Sheep Mtn Lodge.  The ski trip was compliments of my sister-in-law who won it in a drawing back in Rhode Island.  She was generous enough to give it to me thinking I might have more use for it than her.

We spent part of Sunday am going over back-country avalanche drills then set out for our six runs of heli skiing.  We totally scored with recent snow refreshing the Mtns and bluebird calm skies.  For me it was the first time heli skiing as a downhill skier (I switched from tele skiing this season), and first time since 17, 18, & 19 yrs ago when going with my tele buds in Thompson Pass.

For our first run I was a little shaky and off balance. but by the end of the 2nd run I was feeling like a hero.  Its such an awesome feeling skiing longer powder runs one after an other amongst incredible scenery.  All just a few hrs from my house.

Boys skiing

I’m in Port Heiden for a couple weeks of work.  I finally had some time to edit and send out some pics highlighting the spring.

These pics are of the boys first ski lessons.

Valhala Mtn Backcountry ski trip Pt 2

Here are some pics from yesterday.  It snowed during the 2000 ft accent, then broke open once we were at the top.  Had a few great runs in sunshine.  I got some vid clips of skiing that you will be able to see in a week or two on my web page: CraigScola.com.
Its been snowing daily with temps in the mid 20’s everyday-hot by AK standards.  Today we skied some nice bowls.  I only shot video.  Tomorrow a big long day!

Valhala Mtn Ski trip

The first couple days:
First we flew to Spokane, then drove from Spokane to New Denver, BC.  We stopped at White Water ski resort but we were too late to ski as the resort closed in an hr.
Sun we loaded the snow cat, rode for a couple hrs, then did avalanche drills then a very brief ski for sunset.  Beautiful views here!  Last night a few drinks and social time with our new friends.    We Alaskans were the last up last night.
Today breakfast at 0700, muster ready to ski at 0830.  Skinned up and skied down 3 times.  Once back at the lodge one of the older guys lead a yoga session.  I was totally into it.  Really helped me for tonight.  Then we all hung in the sauna (me and Adam for 4 min).  Then I downloaded my pics and everyone (the Canadian families) wanted to see my pics of AK that are on the lapttop.   Good group mof folks.  However, I’m getting tired of being asked about Sarah Palin.  Anyone with a brain can see what she is.  They dont need to ask me.  The dads are about 60 so they help slow the group which is fine for us.  Earlier tonight one of the guides asked me to show him how to operate my camera so he could take photos of ME!  So hopefully you’ll see some pics of Me tomorrow night-if Its not my turn to wash dishes.  My roomie is a slightly older guy from Ut.  He’s in oil and gas.  He;s my “buddy” as we are to buddy up for safety when we ski.
More to come later this week.
