Port Heiden August 2010

Here are some photos from last night and this AM.  Crew on their lunch hr right now.  Weather today : rain, winds 20 mph.  Easier to work today as its not over 30 mph winds as per yesterday.  Monday up to 80 mph so they took it off.  Pretty much impossible to fill supersacks when its real windy.  They are loading supersacks today.  The crew is talking about extending their hrs per day if the wind stays down.  Excavating from former drum storage area.  I hope to see the sack weighing this afternoon.  I was issued a truck but it broke down on me last night while I was exploring.  Didn’t have a radio/phone and had to walk back to the village a few miles.  Great scenery when its clear and sunny.  Didn’t see any bears while walking…fortunately!

Pics from Cape Sarachef

Here are some pics from  sampling two days ago and our commute to Cape Sarichef from Cold Bay where I am stuck.  I never realized how remote and beautiful the Aleutians are!  Incredible scenery today!  Very beautiful and tons of Griz.  Must have seen 30 that day.  Saw some caribou too.

July Pt 2

In mid July we went to the Copper R to go dip netting.  Had to wait a day so we drove into McCarthy for the day.  Went up to check out the Kennecot mine and walked up to the Root Glacier.
